Amir Barkhordary Bio

Amir Barkhordary is a graduate student at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) of the University of Miami. He is also a GMAT, GRE and Math instructor and does interpreting, and translations in three languages. He does care about the health of corals due to their importance for the environment and accordingly he works on assessing better and more relevant approaches to determine the thermal environment of the coral reefs. His research involves the analysis of satellite-derived SSTs in the areas of coral reefs, principally the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland, Australia.
He was born in Tehran, Iran and later on, he moved to Austria where he both studied business and engineering and did part time job for the United Nations in Vienna. He lived there for almost 10 years before he moved to the US where he became a citizen.
Growing up in a middle class family of six with strong ethical values taught Amir hard work, honesty and helping others are the most rewarding approaches one can possess in life.
Amir is a diverse individual with interests in a variety of hobbies such as playing tennis, soccer, swimming, diving, fishing, biking and in particular cooking although not necessarily a fan of washing the dishes afterwards. He served as the director and coach of the Arkansas State University Tennis Club for the duration of one year while doing his MBA there.
Amir’s friends consider him easygoing, a good listener, humorous, persuasive and honest with high degree of integrity and leadership skills.
Although life has been very challenging for him living outside his homeland away from the family for many years in different countries but through all situations of his life, he preserved his equanimity, his keen interest in science and his indefatigable zeal for the instruction of others. He has learned that truly what does not kill one will make him/her stronger in life. One has to fail many times to succeed once. Perseverance, goal orientation, determination and believing in oneself are the keys to success.
It has always been his dream to be on a scientific mission at sea in collaboration with a team as he is looking forward to gaining great experience when he will have the opportunity to get to know extraordinary people on the upcoming cruise and make wonderful new friends.
